Stuff To Know

Q: What happens after I register for a lesson?

A: You'll get a confirmation email. When you arrive for your session, you'll get a tour of the studio, and you'll choose between hand-building, wheel-throwing, and slip-casting. You'll create something amazing and then you'll leave it to dry.  Once it's dried, I'll kiln-fire your work. We'll schedule a time 1-2 weeks out for you to come back to glaze (paint) your work. You'll return to glaze and again leave your work to dry. I'll glaze-fire it and you'll pick it up at your convenience. Ta-da!

Q: What does 'independent studio time' mean?

A: This is an option for people with some pottery experience who don't want guidance in the creation process. I'll greet you, give you a tour, give you your clay, and leave you to create in peace. I'll be on-site, available if you need anything during your visit.

Q: I have an idea of what I want to make. Can we make it happen?

A: Bring your ideas! But also be prepared to move to Plan B. Pottery requires some flexibility. You might end up with some different beautiful thing.

Q: What should I bring?

A: Each 2-hour session comes with 2 pounds of clay and a variety of tools, stamps, and everything you'll need. You'll have access to a wheel and dozens of plaster casts. You don't need to bring anything but an open mind, but you're welcome to bring food and drink, and any stamping mechanisms you might want to use (i.e. Grandma's doilies, cookie cutters).

Q: What if I work quickly and want more clay?

A: More clay can be purchased for $3 per pound.

Q: How should I dress?

A: Good news- Clay washes out of clothing easily! Dress comfortably. If you'll be doing wheel work you'll want to wear something that allows for you to sit with open legs. Aprons will be available for you use.

Q: What's the studio like?

A: Wabi-Sabi Seven is housed in the lower level of a two-story Amish-built barn on my property. It's homey and comfortable, with a plaster table for hand-building, and a table for glazing. Here's a tour of the studio (at night, at it's messiest). Yes, you'll have access to a bathroom.

Q: Will there be other people in the studio during my session?

A: Private lessons are scheduled one-on-one. Your studio time is not shared with other patrons. My children may pop in, but if that interferes with your creative process I can ensure that they're occupied.

Q: What's the parking situation?

A: Please park on the street. The studio is in a residential neighborhood, so parking is free and easy.

Q: What if I'm having too much fun to quit after 2 hours?

A: As long as no one is booked immediately after you, you'll have the option to add up to an hour to your session, in 30 minute increments. See the bookings page for pricing.

Q: What if I need to change or cancel my reservation?

A: As long as you give 24 hours' notice for a reservation cancellation, you'll have the option of receiving a full refund or a 100% credit for rescheduling. If you cancel within the 24 hours prior to your reservation, you'll have the option of receiving a 50% refund or a 75% credit for rescheduling. No refund or credit will be issued if you don't show up for your session.

Q: What if I'm running late?

A: No problem. Things happen. Whether or not you'll get your full 2 hours (90 minutes for collage sessions) depends on my flexibility on that day. If possible, we'll start and end late,. If you're going to be more than 30 minutes late and I'm not able to accommodate, we'll treat it like a last-minute cancellation. (See the above Q&A.)

Q: My friend wants to come just to watch. Can I bring them?

A: Sure. But just one additional person, please. The space would be a bit crowded if we have too many spectators.

Q:Will there be booze?

A: Feel free to BYOB.

Q: Can I bring my children?

A: Yes, kind of. There is a playroom above the studio for children 4-12 years old. For safety reasons, children under 14 aren't permitted to hang out in the studio except during parent-child clay-play sessions.

Q: What about inclement weather?

A: If it's bad enough that you don't feel safe, we'll reschedule.
